What is Destination ImagiNation?

Destination ImagiNation is a non-profit, innovative, education program that provides challenges and creative problem solving for any New Mexico student, kindergarten through college. Students learn to work with others as a team, while at the same time developing individual brainstorming and thinking skills. Creative Programs of New Mexico, Inc., is the New Mexico affiliate which administers this program.

How does it work?

Teams consisting of 5-7 students, under the direction of an adult manager, solve one of six long term problems. Teams work together during the school year and then participate in the State Tournament, where their solution is judged against a set criteria by a team of trained judges. Teams are judged on their presentation and enhancement of their solution. In addition, an improvisational challenge will be given to the team the day of the tournament.

The half dozen new problems offered each year cover a variety of disciplines. Some problems emphasize technical solutions requiring math and science skills. Others emphasize cultural arts, music, drama and literature. As in real life, DI problems have specific limitations and restrictions students must factor into their solutions. The team's challenge is to meet the problem's constraints while developing the most unusual and creative solution possible. The DI problem's "no interference" rule means that neither team managers nor parents can give the students ideas for solving the problems or assistance in constructing the solutions.

Destination ImagiNation and the Future

The DI school program teaches team work, rewards risk and initiative, and encourages participants to search for new and alternative solutions to problems. It also teaches a number of skills that mirror those used in the work place. For instance, students define their goals, map out the skills required to get there, work within a budget, and market and execute their solutions. Working as a team, they develop management and leadership skills. They also learn that in the group effort, everyone makes a significant contribution.

The Team Manager

Anyone can manage - parents, teachers, friends, community members. Experience as a teacher is not necessary to be successful. Training and help is available. The Team Manager sets ground rules so that divergent, creative thinking may flourish. He or she helps the team find resources, teaches needed skills or answers technical questions. The DI Team Manager is a facilitator and is critical to the success of the DI experience for team members.

How much will it cost?

The registration fee varies slightly from year to year. The current fee structure can be viewed at the ShopDI website. The fee includes your national registration with Destination Imagination. Schools can have more than one membership if they desire. In addition, there is a $15 tournament registration fee per team due on the date of the New Mexico state tournament.

Additionally, each team must observe the cost limits of its chosen challenge (usually $100).

Is there help? Yes!

Creative Programs of New Mexico conducts training sessions each year. Sessions are strongly recommended and are open to all interested parties.
